Traffic experts emphasize the need for improved public transport and better traffic management strategies.
Nagpur has reached a critical milestone with its vehicle population soaring to 32.42 lakh, leading to significant traffic congestion. The city, once known for its spacious roads and smooth traffic flow, now faces daily challenges as the number of vehicles continues to grow, with an alarming addition of 475 new registrations each day.
The increase in vehicle registrations is highlighted by data from the three Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) in the district. The City RTO (MH-31) leads with 15.08 lakh vehicles, followed by the Rural RTO (MH-40) with 9.19 lakh and the East RTO (MH-49) with 7.83 lakh. Over the past six years, the annual vehicle registrations have surged, with a staggering 86% increase from 94,286 in 2020-21 to 1,75,282 in 2025-26, indicating a pressing demand for road space and efficient traffic management.
The East RTO has seen one of the most significant increases, with annual registrations rising from 38,272 in 2020-21 to 70,673 in 2025-26. Similarly, the City RTO's figures more than doubled, climbing from 16,790 to 35,492 in the same period. The trend has persisted into the current financial year, with 86,648 vehicles registered in just the first six months of 2026-27.
The influx of vehicles from neighboring districts and states adds to the congestion, as Nagpur serves as a regional hub for employment and education. This influx exacerbates competition for limited road space, particularly in commercial zones and busy intersections. Traffic congestion is now a common occurrence, with slow-moving vehicles reported even outside peak hours, leading to increased travel times and frustration among motorists.
Authorities, including DCP (Traffic) Aditya Mirkhelkar, acknowledge that the growing vehicle population is a major contributor to traffic issues. He emphasizes the need for improved public transport and better traffic management strategies to alleviate congestion. Experts suggest that expanding the road network alone will not suffice; a comprehensive approach that includes enhanced public transport and efficient traffic signal coordination is essential for managing the rising vehicle count effectively.
