Nagpur's Mhalgi Nagar to Test 490 Precast Concrete Blocks
An experimental precast road project in Nagpur aims to address waterlogging issues while enhancing road construction efficiency.
The project will cost Rs3 crore and span 330 meters.
490 precast concrete blocks will be used to create a two-lane road.
The initiative seeks to align road elevation with surrounding ground levels to prevent waterlogging.
The Nagpur Public Works Department (PWD) is set to implement a Rs3 crore experimental precast road in Mhalgi Nagar, utilizing approximately 490 concrete blocks to construct a two-lane roadway. This initiative aims to address persistent waterlogging issues by ensuring the road matches the surrounding ground level, thereby reducing the risk of flooding near residential areas.
The planned road will extend 330 meters in length and 7.5 meters in width. Each precast block is designed to measure 2.5 meters by 3.7 meters, with a thickness of 0.2 meters. Currently, the project is in the planning phase, with construction slated to commence once all necessary approvals are secured.
According to PWD officials, this trial is a response to the common problem of cement roads being elevated higher than adjacent properties, which can obstruct access for residents and lead to rainwater runoff into homes. The innovative approach involves manufacturing the concrete blocks off-site and assembling them at the location, which is expected to expedite the construction process and minimize disruptions to traffic and local access.
Road elevation poses significant challenges in densely populated neighborhoods, where the functionality of a roadway is closely linked to surrounding properties and streets. The PWD aims to mitigate these issues in the Mhalgi Nagar project by ensuring the new road aligns with existing ground levels, thus facilitating easier access for residents and better management of rainwater runoff.
This experimental project will also allow the PWD to evaluate whether precast construction methods can provide improved control over the road's final profile compared to traditional cement road construction. The performance of this precast system on a busy urban road will be closely monitored to determine its viability as a practical alternative for future projects in similar urban settings. Construction will begin once all formalities are completed, marking a potential shift in road construction practices in Nagpur.
