KEY TAKEAWAYS

Nagpur is seeing increased interest from major industrial groups, with several mega projects proposed.

2

Maharashtra has over 10.1 million registered MSMEs, but also the highest closure rate among states.

3

High electricity costs and land allocation difficulties are major challenges for MSMEs in the region.

Nagpur is experiencing a notable surge in industrial interest, with large companies planning significant investments across various sectors. This growth is particularly evident in the Butibori industrial area, where solar manufacturing firms are setting up operations. Additionally, Mahindra's proposed Rs 7,500 crore investment in utility vehicle manufacturing is expected to bolster the region's automotive sector. Industry leaders are optimistic about the potential for ancillary manufacturing growth, which could create numerous opportunities for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

Historically, Nagpur has served as a central hub for industrial activity in the Vidarbha region, which encompasses 11 districts. The region has seen substantial investments from major players in steel manufacturing, with companies like Jindal and JSW establishing facilities in nearby Gadchiroli. Despite these advancements, the region's MSMEs are facing significant hurdles, particularly in terms of high electricity tariffs and challenges related to land acquisition for industrial use.

According to Julfesh Shah, Chairman of the Chamber of Small Industry Associations (COSIA), the region's industrial landscape is transforming, with a notable increase in interest from large industrial groups. However, he points out that the high cost of electricity, which is among the highest in the country, is a major barrier to competitiveness. Rajib Chakraborty, a prominent industry figure, echoes this sentiment, emphasizing that while power availability is sufficient, the tariffs are detrimental to business operations. He also criticizes the current land allocation policies for failing to adequately support smaller enterprises.

The implications of these challenges are significant for the local economy. Maharashtra boasts over 10.1 million registered MSMEs, but the state has also recorded a concerning number of closures, totaling 28,764 between FY24 and FY26. This trend raises alarms about the sustainability of MSMEs in the region, especially as they struggle with operational costs and bureaucratic hurdles. Industry representatives are calling for reforms, including more competitive electricity rates and streamlined land allocation processes to foster a more conducive environment for MSME growth.

Looking ahead, stakeholders are hopeful that with the right policy adjustments and support mechanisms, Nagpur can harness its industrial potential. There are calls for the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) to facilitate easier access to industrial land and for the government to introduce incentives for investors. As Nagpur positions itself as a diversified manufacturing and technology hub, addressing these longstanding issues will be crucial for ensuring the sustained growth of its MSMEs and the overall industrial ecosystem.
