The ongoing construction of the Manewada-Mhalgi Nagar flyover project in Nagpur is anticipated to exacerbate traffic and safety issues on the Inner Ring Road for an additional two years. Despite the tender being awarded in May 2026, work on the essential connecting span has yet to commence, leaving motorists to navigate narrowed lanes, potholes, and barricades.

The 1.5-kilometer connecting flyover is designed to link two flyovers currently under construction, creating a continuous elevated corridor of 2.80 kilometers. The Public Works Department (PWD) has indicated that construction may begin next week, with an expected completion timeline of 18 months. However, discrepancies between the projected completion date and the stated construction period remain unaddressed.

The project gained momentum after Union Minister Nitin Gadkari inaugurated the Manewada and Mhalgi Nagar flyovers in August 2024, proposing a connection between the two structures. The state government later approved the connecting flyover, which received administrative approval of ₹185 crore, awarded at ₹106 crore. The revised design aims to eliminate ramps to ensure a seamless transition between the three structures.

As construction progresses on the original flyovers, road conditions have deteriorated significantly, with reports of potholes and uneven surfaces. Commuters have expressed concerns about the safety of two-wheelers, which are particularly vulnerable on the damaged roads. Barricades have also contributed to increased traffic congestion, leading to long delays during peak hours.

Looking ahead, the immediate priority is the initiation of construction on the connecting flyover. While the PWD aims to complete the project within 18 months from the start date, the overall timeline suggests a potential 24-month construction period, leaving many residents apprehensive about the ongoing traffic challenges.
