In Nagpur, the Bengali community is gearing up for the vibrant celebrations of Durga Pujo, a festival that unites generations through rich traditions and cultural expressions. This year, the Sarbajanin Durga Puja Committee is marking its 57th anniversary with a grand pandal designed in traditional Bengali architectural style, featuring a striking 12.5-foot idol of Goddess Durga made from clay sourced from the Ganga river. The festivities are expected to attract a daily footfall of 10,000 to 15,000 visitors, eager to partake in the celebrations.
The Sarbajanin Durga Puja Committee's president, Vijay Ramani, highlighted that the pandal will host various spiritual and cultural performances throughout the festival, particularly on Saptami, Ashtami, and Navami. The celebrations will conclude on Wednesday, the day following Dussehra, which is on Tuesday this year. Attendees can look forward to the traditional mahaprasad served to devotees, enhancing the communal spirit of the event.
In addition to the Sarbajanin celebrations, the Paschim Nagaria Bengali Cultural Association at Rani Kothi is set to host a grand Bangla Gaaner Bhubon performance on Maha Saptami, along with a dance and drama presentation on October 18, and a Dhunuchi Naach competition on October 19. These events are part of a broader effort to engage the community and showcase Bengali culture through various artistic expressions.
Another significant celebration is the 143-year-old Chakravorty Badir Pujo, which has historical roots dating back to the British Raj. This tradition, initiated by the great-grandfather of former city police chief PKB Chakravorty, includes a Satyanarayan Puja on Panchami, followed by the main Durga Pujo festivities starting from Shashthi. Meanwhile, the Bengali Association at Dinanath High School, with a 107-year legacy, is known for its unique ‘Ek chaali’ idol, which depicts Goddess Durga with her children.
The Ajni Railway Sarbojanin Durga Puja, in its 38th year, combines traditional rituals with cultural performances in multiple languages, including Hindi, Marathi, and Bengali. Devotees can enjoy bhog featuring local delicacies during the festival. The Air Force School's Durga Puja, which has a unique history dating back to the Kargil War, continues to innovate with themed decorations each year, adding to the rich tapestry of celebrations across Nagpur.
