In light of a significant drop in water reserves, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation is contemplating delaying the fifth phase of its ₹900-crore cement road project. This decision comes as the region braces for a potential water crisis this summer, raising concerns about the availability of essential resources for construction.

The ambitious infrastructure initiative, which aims to convert numerous asphalt roads into durable concrete, is heavily reliant on water for mixing and curing processes. With the city facing challenges in maintaining drinking water supplies, officials are weighing the implications of proceeding with a project that demands substantial water usage.

The Executive Engineer’s Office from the Public Works Department has confirmed that they are actively assessing the situation. While no official decision has been finalized, the focus remains on ensuring that drinking water availability takes precedence over construction needs. The city recorded its lowest rainfall in 18 years, leading to critical storage levels in key reservoirs, which are currently at just 58% capacity.

In response to the ongoing crisis, civic teams have proposed imposing fines of up to ₹5,000 for the misuse of drinking water. This move underscores the urgency of water conservation efforts, making it counterproductive to supply water tankers for construction purposes. The original plan for Phase 5 included the transformation of 135 roads across 89.22 kilometres, but it has since expanded to encompass around 265 roads following input from local legislators.

As the situation evolves, the consensus among city officials is to suspend major roadworks until reservoir levels improve, ideally by the next monsoon season. This cautious approach reflects the city's commitment to prioritizing essential water supplies for its residents while navigating the challenges of infrastructure development.
