In a significant development for commuters in Nagpur, the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) has officially handed over a newly constructed underground parking facility to Central Railway, which is expected to alleviate congestion at the west entrance of the Nagpur Railway Station. This handover occurred on Saturday, and the facility is anticipated to open within the next few days, according to Aman Mittal, the senior divisional commercial manager of Central Railway’s Nagpur division.

The underground parking is designed to accommodate approximately 1,600 two-wheelers and 290 cars, providing a structured solution to the current chaotic situation where private vehicles and autorickshaws compete for limited space. This development follows a lengthy redevelopment process that began in July 2020, with the foundation stone laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December 2022. The overall redevelopment project, valued at ₹487.77 crores, represents a major investment in the station's infrastructure.

Vinayak Garg, the divisional railway manager, emphasized the urgency of completing the final touches on the parking facility to ensure it becomes available to the public without unnecessary delays. While RLDA aimed to resolve issues related to water leakage before the handover, Central Railway authorities advocated for an early opening, suggesting that any remaining repairs could be conducted concurrently with operations, provided safety standards are met.

The new parking area features designated bays, entry and exit ramps, and clearly marked vehicle spaces, along with lifts and staircases connecting it to the station’s ground level. Enhanced signage, including digital displays, will assist motorists navigating the facility. Additionally, plans are in place to organize surrounding areas into dedicated vehicle lanes and a prepaid autorickshaw stand, further improving traffic management around the station.

To enhance security, a joint patrolling post for the Railway Protection Force and Government Railway Police is also in the works, aimed at deterring criminal activities and ensuring passenger safety. The broader redevelopment initiative includes new station buildings, improved passenger flow, upgraded amenities, and better integration with other transport systems, with a target completion date set for March 2027. However, efforts are being made to expedite the remaining work to enhance the commuter experience as soon as possible.
