The newly completed underground parking facility at the west gate of Nagpur Railway Station is on the verge of opening, with operations anticipated to start within the next two to three days. This facility aims to reduce traffic congestion and enhance vehicle movement at one of the station's busiest entrances, providing a much-needed solution to the current parking challenges.

The parking area is designed to accommodate approximately 1,600 two-wheelers and 290 cars. Aman Mittal, the Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of Central Railway’s Nagpur Division, confirmed that preparations are actively underway to make the facility operational. Currently, the entrance suffers from overcrowding as private vehicles, autorickshaws, and passengers vie for limited parking space, leading to frequent traffic snarls.

The handover of the parking facility comes nearly three years and three months after the redevelopment work commenced in July 2023. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the larger station redevelopment project in December 2022, which has an estimated budget of Rs. 4.88 billion. Delays in the transfer of the parking facility were primarily due to concerns regarding water leakage and seepage in certain areas.

Railway officials are pushing for an expedited opening while ensuring that any remaining repairs and finishing touches are completed in compliance with safety protocols. The facility features designated vehicle bays, entry and exit ramps, barriers, lifts, and staircases that connect it to the station premises. Additionally, signboards and planned digital signage will guide motorists navigating the area.

The broader traffic management plan includes dedicated lanes for vehicles, a prepaid autorickshaw stand, and a designated queueing area for passengers. Prepaid autorickshaw services will operate independently on the ground floor. To enhance security and regulate traffic flow, a joint patrolling post for the Railway Protection Force and Government Railway Police, along with a traffic police booth, is also being established. The overall redevelopment project, which includes new buildings and improved passenger amenities, is expected to be completed by March 2027.
