The Nagpur Railway Station has officially launched its underground parking facility as of October 20, 2023, providing much-needed relief from the traffic congestion that has affected the station's western entrance for the past four years. This facility is the first operational component of the ambitious Rs 487.77-crore Nagpur Railway Station Redevelopment Project, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 11, 2022.

Constructed over a period of 44 months, the underground parking area has been handed over to the Nagpur Division of Central Railway. It includes designated parking spaces for both cars and two-wheelers, along with a separate access-controlled zone for passenger pick-up and drop-off. This new arrangement is expected to streamline vehicle movement around the station, enhancing overall accessibility for commuters.

Parking charges for two-wheelers are structured according to the duration of stay, with fees ranging from Rs 10 for up to 2 hours to Rs 35 for 12 to 24 hours. Additionally, a helmet parking service is available for Rs 5. For the pick-up and drop-off zone, which accommodates around 120 four-wheelers, the charges are Rs 50 for up to 1 hour and Rs 100 for 1 to 2 hours, with a strict penalty of Rs 1,000 for overstaying.

The underground facility is equipped with modern infrastructure, including LED lighting, fire-safety systems, and clear signage in Marathi, Hindi, and English. These signboards guide motorists to various designated areas, helping to prevent confusion and ensuring smooth traffic flow at the station's entrance. The facility's design aims to separate long-duration parking from passenger operations, which is expected to significantly improve the overall experience for travelers.

Looking ahead, the opening of this underground parking facility marks a critical milestone in the ongoing redevelopment of Nagpur Railway Station. As the project progresses, further enhancements are anticipated, which will continue to improve the infrastructure and services available to passengers, ultimately contributing to a more efficient railway experience in the region.
