A professor from Symbiosis University’s Nagpur campus has been placed on administrative leave following allegations of sending inappropriate messages to a former female student. The university confirmed this decision on October 19, 2026, after receiving complaints regarding the professor's conduct, which allegedly included urging the student to adopt Islamic religious practices.
The situation escalated when protests erupted from right-wing groups, including the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, demanding the professor's removal and accountability. In response, Symbiosis International (Deemed University) announced the formation of a high-powered committee to investigate the allegations thoroughly, emphasizing its commitment to student safety and dignity.
According to university officials, the professor has already submitted his resignation amidst the unfolding controversy. However, the Nagpur city police reported that neither the former student nor her father has lodged a formal complaint or provided any evidence regarding the alleged messages, which complicates the investigation. A police official noted that the absence of a complaint has hindered their ability to verify the claims made against the professor.
The protests saw around 15 to 17 individuals from various organizations gathering at the university campus, prompting police intervention to facilitate dialogue between the demonstrators and university officials. The university's statement highlighted its awareness of the situation and the ongoing social media discussions surrounding the allegations.
Looking ahead, the university will take further action based on the findings of the committee once it submits its report.
