In light of a concerning rise in attacks on doctors, Nagpur Police Commissioner Vishwas Nangre Patil has announced plans to reopen and expedite investigations into old cases of assaults against medical professionals. This initiative comes after four reported incidents within a month, prompting urgent calls from the medical community for immediate action and stricter measures to protect healthcare workers.
During a recent interview, Commissioner Patil emphasized the importance of building robust, evidence-based cases that can withstand legal scrutiny. He noted that police are currently reviewing various forms of evidence, including CCTV footage, to construct strong cases that lead to successful prosecutions. The commissioner highlighted that any arrests made will be grounded in sufficient evidence to ensure that legal actions are sound and justifiable.
To prevent further incidents, the police are considering implementing measures such as requiring sureties from individuals accused of attacking doctors. This would involve mandating these individuals to provide guarantees of good behavior, with the possibility of detention for non-compliance. Commissioner Patil stated that this approach is particularly relevant in cases involving assaults on healthcare professionals, aiming to deter future violence.
In addition to addressing current incidents, the Nagpur police are also taking steps to resolve longstanding cases of assaults on doctors that have remained unresolved for years. The commissioner confirmed that efforts are underway to identify these cases and prioritize their trials, ensuring they reach a logical conclusion. He reiterated the critical role of evidence collection, citing a recent case where CCTV footage was instrumental in securing a conviction.
Through these proactive measures, Commissioner Patil aims to send a clear message that violence against doctors and healthcare institutions will not be tolerated. By pursuing convictions in both recent and historical cases, the police intend to reinforce the legal consequences of such actions, thereby enhancing the safety and security of medical professionals in Nagpur.
