In a proactive measure to tackle noise pollution during festive celebrations, Nagpur city police have registered 22 cases against violators of noise norms. The police have intensified their awareness campaign aimed at curbing the excessive use of DJs and loud sound systems, which often breach prescribed noise levels.
The registered cases include seven during Dahi Handi celebrations, one during Pola, three during Marbat processions, three during the arrival of Ganesh idols, and eight during immersion ceremonies. These cases were filed against both event organizers and sound-system operators for failing to adhere to noise regulations. Notably, the Nagpur rural police reported no violations, attributing this success to extensive awareness drives and meetings with local mandals and festival organizers.
According to the data provided by the city police, the Bombay High Court's Nagpur bench has consistently urged law enforcement to enforce noise-pollution regulations strictly. Following reports of violations during the Dahi Handi and Marbat celebrations, the court requested a detailed report from the police in September. Consequently, the police imposed restrictions on high-powered sound systems and modified vehicles from September 3 to November 1.
The police clarified that no actions were taken against systems that operated within permissible noise limits. The awareness campaign has been a significant aspect of their strategy, with around 44 meetings held with festival organizers and sound-system operators to inform them about acceptable sound levels and the repercussions of violations. The issue gained particular attention during Dahi Handi celebrations, where police recorded sound levels exceeding 102.4 decibels at Ajni Square, leading to a case against 13 individuals for exceeding the permitted time.
In addition to city efforts, Nagpur Rural Police have also enhanced preventive measures by engaging with Ganpati mandal organizers and local representatives. They reviewed arrangements for various festivals, including Pola and Ganesh Chaturthi, to ensure compliance with noise regulations. The overarching goal remains to maintain a festive atmosphere while safeguarding the comfort of residents, particularly vulnerable groups such as senior citizens and patients.
