Nagpur Police have successfully apprehended a masked burglar following a robbery incident in the Gittikhadan area that left an elderly woman injured. The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Clement alias Rohit Eugene Pillay, was arrested after an extensive investigation that involved analyzing footage from approximately 80 CCTV cameras and employing a forensic technique known as gait analysis. The incident occurred at the residence of Raja Sharif, where the intruder allegedly assaulted Sharif's mother before fleeing the scene.
The investigation began immediately after the robbery, prompting police to gather evidence from the crime scene and surrounding areas. Given that the suspect's face was concealed by a mask, traditional identification methods were ineffective. Investigators focused on the suspect's walking patterns and body movements, which were captured by various cameras. This innovative approach allowed them to establish a connection between the suspect's movements and the crime, leading to Pillay's identification.
Police Inspector Shubhangi Deshmukh, who led the Crime Branch Unit-2's investigation, reported that the team meticulously reviewed CCTV footage to reconstruct the suspect's path. They compared recordings from different locations to identify a match in the suspect's gait. This method proved crucial, as it provided leads that were not reliant on facial recognition. The analysis of the suspect's walking style ultimately played a significant role in his arrest on Sunday night.
The investigation has also raised questions about a potential link to another incident involving an elderly woman in the Gaddigodam area, where Pillay allegedly attempted a similar break-in but fled when the victim called for help. Authorities are now assessing whether these incidents are connected and exploring Pillay's possible involvement in other crimes targeting senior citizens. The police are also reviewing his criminal history to determine if he has been linked to additional offenses.
As the investigation continues, police are focused on piecing together the events surrounding the Gittikhadan robbery and the extent of Pillay's involvement in both incidents. The case highlights the critical role of modern technology in law enforcement, demonstrating that even when a suspect's face is obscured, their movements can provide vital clues. For residents, particularly the elderly, this serves as a reminder of the importance of home security measures and the need to report any suspicious activities promptly.
