A policy framework will be established before any removal or replanting.

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is currently deliberating the potential replacement of Conocarpus trees planted throughout the city. This consideration follows a recent meeting of the Tree Committee, where the adverse ecological impacts of these trees were discussed. Municipal Commissioner Dr. Vipin Itankar presided over the meeting, where expert members expressed their concerns regarding the species.

The Tree Committee's discussions highlighted significant issues related to Conocarpus, including its limited role in enhancing local biodiversity, the potential for allergenic pollen, and its aggressive root systems that can damage urban infrastructure. Previous reports, such as one published by 'The Hitavada' on July 16, have also raised alarms about the ecological ramifications of this species, which was once favored for its rapid growth and low maintenance needs.

The NMC has not yet reached a final decision regarding the proposed changes. An official from the Garden Department indicated that there is currently no specific policy in Maharashtra or Nagpur governing the removal of Conocarpus trees. The committee's suggestions will be thoroughly evaluated, and a policy draft will be created after consulting with all relevant stakeholders. If a ban on the species is recommended, the proposal will be submitted to the NMC House for further consideration.

The focus of the proposed changes primarily concerns 18 gardens located in Prabhag No 4 and 25, as well as other areas along the Ring Road. The NMC aims to ensure that any new plantations will utilize suitable indigenous species, thereby promoting the city's biodiversity and ecological health in the long term.

As the NMC moves forward, the next steps will involve gathering input from various stakeholders and developing a comprehensive policy framework. This will guide any future actions regarding the removal of Conocarpus trees and the introduction of new plant species, ensuring that ecological considerations are prioritized in urban planning efforts.
