Hospital staff were attacked and property vandalized over treatment charges.
Imambada police have filed a case against the patient's relatives and six others.
The incident highlights rising tensions between healthcare providers and patients' families.
In a distressing event on Tuesday night, staff at a private hospital on Umred Road in Nagpur faced violence and intimidation over treatment costs for an accident victim. The altercation reportedly began after hospital personnel informed the patient's relatives about a fracture and requested payment of Rs 1,500 for the necessary medical care.
The situation escalated when the patient's family, unhappy with the charges, threatened the hospital staff before attempting to transfer the patient to another facility. Following this, one of the relatives returned with a group of six individuals, confronting the staff regarding the treatment documentation. During this confrontation, the group allegedly assaulted a staff member with a hockey stick, resulting in injuries and significant property damage within the hospital.
The Imambada police have since registered a case against the accused, citing charges of assault, criminal intimidation, and property damage. The police are currently conducting further investigations to gather more evidence and identify all individuals involved in the incident.
This incident is part of a troubling trend in recent months, where healthcare professionals have faced increasing aggression from patients' families. Just weeks prior, a similar situation occurred at Sahyadri Super Speciality Hospital in Hadapsar, where relatives of a deceased patient engaged in stone pelting and vandalism. Such events raise serious concerns regarding the safety of medical staff and the overall environment in healthcare settings.
As investigations continue, authorities are emphasizing the need for improved security measures in hospitals to protect staff and ensure a safe environment for patient care. The healthcare community is calling for a dialogue to address the growing tensions and find solutions that can prevent future incidents of violence against medical personnel.
