In a bid to protect tiger populations, the Nagpur Forest Division is advocating for the preservation of wildlife corridors during World Wildlife Week. The initiative underscores the necessity of maintaining connectivity between fragmented habitats, allowing animals to traverse between protected areas.

During a recent visit to the Chorbahuli range in the Pench Tiger Reserve, honorary wildlife warden Ajinkya Bhatkar emphasized that tigers frequently migrate between various forests, including Pench, Navegaon-Nagzira, and Bor, in search of food, territory, and mates. However, the expansion of infrastructure such as roads, railways, and urban development poses significant threats to these natural movements.

Bhatkar noted that historical forest landscapes have been disrupted by human activities, leading to the creation of isolated patches. He explained that establishing wildlife corridors is vital for ensuring genetic diversity among animal populations, as isolation can lead to inbreeding and weakened species over time. By connecting these fragmented areas, animals can move safely, which is essential for fostering robust ecosystems.

The Nagpur Forest Division is also prioritizing education and awareness among the youth. Divisional forest officer Ritesh Deogade has been actively visiting colleges to promote wildlife conservation and has organized competitions to inspire students to engage with environmental issues. He remarked on the positive direction students are taking in their essays on wildlife conservation, indicating a growing interest in sustainable practices.

Officials believe that enhancing awareness, along with efforts to restore and maintain wildlife corridors, is crucial to preventing protected areas from becoming isolated habitats. The ongoing initiatives aim to foster a deeper connection between people and nature, ensuring the survival of vital species like tigers in the region.
