Rushikesh Reddy, the Deputy Commissioner of Police for Nagpur Zone-I, has been awarded the prestigious Union Home Minister’s Efficiency Medal for 2026. This recognition comes in light of his exemplary work in solving a complex murder case in Nanded, which was linked to an international terror network. The announcement was made by the Ministry of Home Affairs on October 31, 2026, as part of a broader recognition of 490 personnel from various law enforcement agencies across India.
The case that brought Reddy into the spotlight dates back to February 10, 2025, when a shooting incident in Nanded resulted in the death of a young man. Initially perceived as a blind murder, the investigation quickly evolved, revealing connections to Harvinder Singh, alias Rinda, and his associate Happy Passia, both of whom are linked to the Pakistan-based terrorist organization Babbar Khalsa International. Reddy, while serving as the Superintendent of Police with the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad, played a crucial role in cracking the case within a mere 20 days.
The investigation led to the identification of 14 suspects, with 10 arrests made. Lookout Circulars were issued for the remaining four individuals believed to be outside India. The successful resolution of the case was a result of collaborative efforts involving the Maharashtra ATS, Punjab Police, various intelligence agencies, NATGRID, and the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
In addition to Reddy, three other officials from Nagpur were also honored for their contributions. Vijay Thackeray, Director of Maharashtra’s State Forensic Science Laboratories, and Inspectors Prabhavati Ekurke and Ritesh Aher received recognition for their respective roles in significant investigations. Ekurke was acknowledged for her work on a case involving threat calls made to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, which traced back to a criminal operating from prison.
The Union Home Minister’s Efficiency Medal, established by the Ministry of Home Affairs in February 2024, is awarded annually on October 31, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Reddy’s recognition not only highlights his individual contributions but also underscores the commitment of Nagpur’s police force to tackling organized crime and enhancing national security.
