Embraer, a prominent Brazilian aircraft manufacturer, alongside India's Mahindra Group, has selected Nagpur as the prospective site for an assembly plant dedicated to the C-390 Millennium military transport aircraft. This decision is part of their collaborative efforts to engage with the Indian Air Force (IAF) regarding the Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) program.
The two companies announced their plans in a press release, indicating that they are actively collaborating with the Maharashtra Government. They aim to establish a Final Assembly Line in Nagpur for the production of the C-390 Millennium, contingent upon the aircraft being chosen by the Indian Government and an order being placed under the IAF’s MTA initiative. This facility is expected to bolster local assembly and industrialization efforts in India.
In their statement, Embraer and Mahindra emphasized their commitment to working closely with the Maharashtra Government to expedite the necessary industrial infrastructure. Bosco da Costa Junior, President & CEO of Embraer Defense & Security, highlighted the significance of this partnership in fostering a robust aerospace ecosystem in India, contingent on the selection of the C-390 Millennium for the IAF.
Vinod Sahay, a member of the Mahindra Group Executive Board, reiterated the company's dedication to developing a competitive aerospace sector in India. He expressed gratitude towards the Maharashtra Government for facilitating the land allotment in Nagpur, which is crucial for establishing the required industrial ecosystem. The proposed facility aims to integrate Indian aerospace companies into the C-390 Millennium ecosystem, enhancing manufacturing, training, and lifecycle support.
The C-390 Millennium is designed for various military missions, including troop transport, medical evacuation, and humanitarian efforts, with a payload capacity of up to 26 tonnes. The partnership between Embraer and Mahindra, formalized through a Strategic Cooperation Agreement in October 2025, aims to leverage their combined expertise in aerospace engineering and manufacturing to support the Indian aerospace industry. As they move forward, both companies will continue to engage with the Indian Government and relevant stakeholders to ensure the success of the program.
