GMR Nagpur International Airport Limited (GNIAL) is gearing up for a significant terminal refurbishment at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport. This initiative aims to modernize the airport's infrastructure and improve the overall passenger experience. The project is in the preparatory stages, with financial closure already achieved and design development currently underway.

CEO Srikanth Bhandarkar highlighted that the airport has made several enhancements over the past three months, focusing on key passenger touchpoints. The planned refurbishment will cover approximately 19,500 square meters of the existing terminal, incorporating various upgrades to facilitate smoother passenger flow and increased comfort.

Among the proposed improvements are the installation of four self-bag-drop counters and five self-check-in kiosks, as well as the addition of four X-ray machines. The project will also expand the forecourt kerb area, upgrade washrooms, and create dedicated domestic and international lounges. Furthermore, the number of bus boarding gates will increase from two to four, allowing for better passenger access.

The first phase of the refurbishment is anticipated to be completed within 12 to 18 months from the commencement of work, pending necessary regulatory approvals. Recent enhancements at the airport include the deployment of passenger support associates and queue managers, improved facial-recognition processing through Digi Yatra, and better terminal lighting and landscaping. New carpets have also been installed at aerobridges, along with fragrance systems to enhance the ambiance.

In addition to these upgrades, GNIAL has strengthened security measures by adding more trays and preparation tables for screening. Improvements in trolley and baggage services, enhanced housekeeping, and pest-control measures have been implemented. The airport has also ensured that medical personnel, including doctors and paramedics, are available around the clock to assist passengers in need.
