In a significant development for Nagpur's aviation infrastructure, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has agreed to transfer 27 acres of land for the construction of a new terminal at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport. This agreement was announced by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis following a meeting with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi on Wednesday.
The discussions between Fadnavis and Singh were described as "very positive," leading to the IAF's commitment to expedite the land transfer. The IAF will immediately hand over a portion of the required land, which is crucial for the commencement of terminal construction. Fadnavis emphasized that the remaining land will also be made available after necessary preparations are completed by the Air Force.
In addition to the land transfer, the IAF has granted special permission for the movement of heavy machinery within the airport premises. This is particularly important as the area currently accommodates various Air Force operations, including helicopter parking. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, who represents Nagpur in the Lok Sabha, participated in the meeting virtually, reinforcing the collaborative efforts to enhance the airport's infrastructure.
The successful negotiation and subsequent agreement pave the way for the long-awaited terminal building project at Nagpur Airport. With the transfer of land and permissions secured, the state government can now proceed with the construction, which is expected to significantly improve the airport's capacity and services for travelers.
Looking ahead, the focus will shift to the actual construction timeline and the implementation of the terminal project. As preparations begin, stakeholders are optimistic about the positive impact this development will have on air travel in the region, enhancing connectivity and supporting economic growth in Nagpur and surrounding areas.
