In a significant advancement for industrial growth in the Vidarbha region, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (M&M) has officially taken possession of an 800-acre land parcel located in the Additional Butibori Industrial Area of Nagpur. This milestone was achieved on Monday when the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) handed over the land after M&M deposited over Rs 706 crore for the initial phase of the project.
The handover ceremony was attended by key officials from MIDC, including Manohar Pote, Regional Officer, and Rajesh Jhanjal, Chief Engineer. Dr. Vinay Khanolkar, Chief Operating Officer of M&M’s Auto Division, along with Nitin Vaidya, Plant Head for the Nagpur Greenfield Project, and Ashish Sodte, Senior Representative of M&M, formally accepted the land. The event also saw participation from Kapil Chandrayan of the Association for Industries Development (AID).
The mega-project in Nagpur is set to involve a total investment exceeding Rs 15,000 crore, with the potential to generate over 20,000 direct jobs. MIDC has plans to allocate a total of 1,500 acres for this facility, with the initial 800 acres already handed over. The remaining 700 acres are expected to be transferred soon, further expanding the project’s footprint.
Once fully operational, this facility will stand as Mahindra's largest integrated manufacturing site in India, with an annual production capacity of over 700,000 commercial vehicles, which includes more than 500,000 vehicles and 100,000 tractors across various powertrains and advanced technologies. To complement this manufacturing hub, a dedicated 150-acre supplier park is being developed in Sambhajinagar, which will provide components for the Nagpur plant as well as for existing facilities in Chakan and Nashik.
In addition to establishing manufacturing capabilities, Mahindra is committed to developing the necessary human capital for the project. The company plans to set up a specialized skilling center in Nagpur aimed at training local talent in essential technical fields such as mechanical operations, welding, and painting. Experienced personnel from existing plants will also be involved in mentoring and training the new workforce over the next two to three years, ensuring a skilled labor pool for the upcoming facility.
