In response to the ongoing drought crisis, Maharashtra's government is set to tap into the vast forest areas of Vidarbha for fodder cultivation. Minister Bawankule announced this initiative during a press briefing in Nagpur, emphasizing the need for district-wise fodder supply to address the impending scarcity. He stated that by providing fodder seeds to forest departments and developing grasslands, the state can effectively manage fodder resources.

Bawankule's remarks came after a ground survey of drought-affected regions, where he noted significant damage to kharif crops. The minister highlighted the urgency of the situation, indicating that fodder shortages could escalate into a major issue for livestock farmers. To combat this, the government has activated two key schemes: the Maa Jijau Mahila Sakshamikaran Yojana and the Vairan Vikas Karyakram, aimed at promoting fodder cultivation in areas with adequate soil moisture.

Recent reports indicate alarming fodder stock levels in parts of Marathwada, particularly in Beed and Jalna, where less than 65 days of fodder supply remained as of September 30. Agricultural experts have called for immediate government intervention to avert a crisis. Bawankule acknowledged these concerns and reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring sufficient fodder availability for farmers.

In addition to fodder management, Bawankule stressed that drinking water would remain a top priority for the government. He mentioned that assessments of water requirements for each city are underway to determine how much water can be released from reservoirs, especially as the drought situation is expected to worsen in the coming months.

Looking ahead, the Maharashtra government is poised to implement its plans for fodder reserves in Vidarbha and other regions. This initiative not only aims to support livestock farmers but also seeks to mitigate the broader impacts of drought on agriculture and rural livelihoods across the state.
