In a significant gesture of support, the Maharashtra government has awarded ₹1 crore to the family of Flight Lieutenant Purvesh Duragkar, who tragically lost his life in a Sukhoi 30MKI crash. This financial assistance was presented to his parents, Ravindra and Sandhya Duragkar, in Nagpur, eight months after the incident occurred during a training sortie.
Flight Lieutenant Duragkar was part of a military operation known as Operation Sindoor, which was initiated following a terror attack in Pahalgam last year. The grant was officially handed over by Major Anand Patharkar (Rtd), the District Sainik Welfare Officer, who confirmed that each parent received ₹50 lakh as part of the ex-gratia payment sanctioned by the state government.
The tragic accident took place on March 5, 2026, in Karbi Anglong district, Assam, when Duragkar and his co-pilot, Squadron Leader Anuj, were conducting a training flight. The aircraft lost contact with ground control shortly after taking off from Jorhat, leading to a search operation that ultimately confirmed the pilots' fatalities the following day.
Duragkar was a proud resident of Nagpur, where he completed his Class X at South Public School in 2015. He later pursued a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Dr. Ambedkar College and trained at the Defence Services Academy in Bhandara as he prepared for the National Defence Academy (NDA) entrance. His commitment to education and the armed forces remained evident as he actively encouraged students from his school and academy to consider careers in the military.
Looking ahead, the family of Flight Lieutenant Duragkar will likely continue to receive support from various organizations and the community as they navigate this difficult period. The Maharashtra government's financial assistance serves as a recognition of the sacrifices made by Duragkar and his family, highlighting the state's commitment to honoring its armed forces personnel.
