₹9.77 crore sanctioned for transgender toilets at ST bus stands.
Funds allocated across 31 divisions, with Vidarbha receiving ₹2.71 crore.
Proposal initiated by ST corporation's vice-chairperson following ministerial directive.
In a significant move towards inclusivity, the Maharashtra government has sanctioned ₹9.77 crore for the construction of separate toilets for transgender individuals at state transport (ST) bus stands. This decision addresses the longstanding issue of the absence of designated facilities, which has caused considerable distress for transgender persons using public transport.
The government resolution issued on Wednesday details that the funds will cover 31 ST divisions across the state. The transport department's approval highlights the social and physical challenges faced by transgender individuals due to the lack of appropriate facilities at bus stands. This initiative aims to alleviate these difficulties and promote dignity and respect for all citizens.
In the Vidarbha region, a total of ₹2.71 crore has been allocated, with Amravati receiving the largest share of ₹50.74 lakh, followed closely by Nagpur at ₹48.40 lakh. Other divisions such as Yavatmal, Buldhana, and Bhandara have also been allocated significant amounts, while Kolhapur division tops the state with ₹55.20 lakh, and Latur receives the least at ₹9.60 lakh.
The proposal for this initiative was put forth by the vice-chairperson and managing director of the ST corporation, following a directive from the minister of state for urban development, transport, and social justice. The funding will be sourced from the social justice department's budget aimed at establishing a welfare board for transgender persons and safeguarding their rights.
However, the approval comes with specific conditions. Detailed architectural plans must be submitted and approved before construction can commence, along with a comprehensive estimate prepared by the concerned executive engineer. The government resolution does not specify the exact number of toilets to be built or their locations, as the financial allocations are provided in lump sums by division.
