On October 12, 2023, lawyers and students in Nagpur organized separate protests to voice their opposition against the mass detentions that occurred during recent demonstrations in New Delhi. These protests were sparked by calls for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, following allegations of unlawful detentions of individuals advocating for democratic rights.
The protests in Nagpur were marked by a significant turnout of advocates who gathered around the Nagpur District and Sessions Court. They expressed solidarity with their counterparts in Delhi, who faced similar challenges during the protests. The lawyers raised slogans condemning the actions of the Central government and the Chief Election Commissioner, emphasizing the necessity of protecting the rights of citizens to protest and express dissent in a democratic society.
Students from the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) and the All India Students’ Federation (AISF) also joined the protests, gathering at Samvidhan Square. They voiced their concerns regarding the treatment of students in Delhi, alleging that the national atmosphere is shifting towards authoritarianism. Their participation highlighted the broader implications of the situation, as they called for a restoration of democratic values and the safeguarding of civil liberties.
Advocate Roshan Bagde, a former president of the District Bar Association, articulated the purpose of the protest, stating that it was organized to show support for the demonstrations in Delhi and to condemn the actions taken against lawyers. The protests in Nagpur reflect a growing discontent with the current political climate and a demand for accountability from those in power.
Looking ahead, the legal community and student organizations plan to continue their advocacy efforts, emphasizing the importance of upholding democratic traditions and the rule of law. Future demonstrations may be organized to maintain pressure on the government and to ensure that the voices of dissent are heard and respected.
