The Indian Air Force has agreed to hand over 9 hectares for the construction of a new terminal at Nagpur Airport, facilitating major expansion plans.
The IAF will transfer 9 hectares immediately for the terminal construction.
Phase I of the Nagpur Airport development is set for completion by June 2029.
The Maharashtra government and GMR Nagpur International Airport Ltd will assist in connecting the new site.
In a significant development for the Nagpur Airport expansion, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has agreed to transfer 9 hectares of land for the construction of a new terminal building at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport. This decision was confirmed by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis during a meeting attended by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and senior officials from the Air Force and Maharashtra government.
The land handover is part of a broader initiative to enhance the airport's infrastructure, which is expected to accommodate increasing passenger traffic. Fadnavis noted that the necessary construction permissions would be granted alongside the land transfer, ensuring that the project proceeds without delay. He expressed optimism that this collaboration would lead to the timely completion of the first phase of the airport's development by June 2029.
As part of the arrangement, the Maharashtra government and GMR Nagpur International Airport Ltd (GNIAL), which manages the airport, will provide essential connectivity to the new Air Force site. This support will continue until new defense facilities are established, ensuring seamless operations for the IAF.
The Chief Minister previously indicated that the IAF would expedite the transfer of the required land for the terminal, while the remaining 18 hectares needed for the overall project will be made available by June 2028. This strategic move is crucial for the planned expansion, which aims to enhance passenger-handling capabilities and improve the airport's overall capacity.
Looking ahead, stakeholders are focused on ensuring that the development progresses smoothly. The collaboration between the IAF, Maharashtra government, and GNIAL is expected to pave the way for a modernized airport that meets future demands, with further updates anticipated as the project develops.
