In Nagpur, the aftermath of the recent idol immersion has left Futala Lake in a state of disarray, with large piles of nirmalya and other puja offerings littering the banks near Amravati Road. Despite significant investments in restoring the Futala Musical Fountain, the surrounding area has become a site of concern for both locals and environmentalists alike.

The situation escalated as artificial immersion tanks provided by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) overflowed, prompting devotees to breach barricades and dispose of idols and offerings directly into the lake. Eyewitness accounts indicate that NMC sanitation personnel were notably absent during critical times, leading to a backlog of waste that remained unaddressed. Observations made at 6:30 PM and again at 10 PM revealed no staff present to manage the aftermath of the immersion.

Environmentalist Kaustav Chatterjee, who leads the Green Vigil Foundation, highlighted the discrepancies in civic management between the Ganesh Visarjan and the recent Devi Visarjan. He noted that the artificial tanks were not regularly cleaned, resulting in the accumulation of waste at a time when Nagpur is grappling with a water crisis. Chatterjee emphasized the need for prioritizing the protection of water bodies, especially given the low water levels in local reservoirs.

Residents have voiced their dissatisfaction with the current state of the lakefront. Kamlesh Gupta, a local resident, questioned the effectiveness of the artificial tanks, pointing out that their installation was futile without a plan for regular maintenance. The unsightly conditions have left many wondering where devotees can perform their rituals in a clean environment, as the area has become increasingly filthy.

As of now, attempts to contact NMC officials for comments have gone unanswered, leaving the community and environmental advocates concerned about the future of Futala Lake. The lack of proper arrangements for idol immersion raises questions about the city's commitment to maintaining its public spaces and protecting its natural resources.
