In a surprising turn of events, Congress candidate Wanjari has successfully retained his seat in the Legislative Council elections held in Nagpur, defeating BJP's Sudhakar Kohale by a margin of 3,271 votes. This victory is particularly significant as it occurred in the hometown of prominent BJP leaders, including Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Wanjari garnered a total of 67,231 votes, while Kohale received 63,960, marking a notable achievement for the Congress party in a challenging political landscape.
The backdrop of this election is marked by a series of contests across multiple states, including Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Karnataka, where Congress struggled to make a substantial impact. Wanjari's win not only extends Congress's tenure in a constituency historically linked to the BJP and its predecessor, the Jan Sangh, but also serves as a morale booster for the party amid its broader electoral challenges. His previous victory in 2020, where he defeated BJP's Sandip Joshi by over 18,000 votes, laid the groundwork for this recent success.
Independent candidate Nitesh Karale, who separated from the NCP, emerged as a significant third force in the elections, securing 24,249 votes. His presence in the race played a pivotal role, as his second preference votes ultimately aided Wanjari in clinching victory. The election process was intense, lasting nearly two days, highlighting the competitive nature of the contest.
Wanjari's strong support from the educational sector, with backing from approximately 35 teachers' organizations, was instrumental in his success. His connections with Nagpur University and various educational institutions helped him consolidate support among graduates and teachers across the region. This grassroots backing was crucial in a constituency where educational networks hold considerable influence.
Looking ahead, the BJP faces a challenging road to reclaim its traditional stronghold, with a six-year wait before the next opportunity arises. The internal discord within the BJP, particularly the candidacy of former MLC Anil Sole as an Independent after being denied a party ticket, further complicates the party's prospects. Sole's criticism of the party's candidate selection process underscores the discontent among party workers, which could have lasting implications for future elections.
