BJP faces setback in Nagpur, traditionally a stronghold.
In a closely contested election, Congress candidate Abhijeet Wanjari emerged victorious in the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections for the Nagpur Division Graduates’ constituency, defeating BJP's Sudhakar Kohale by a margin of 3,271 votes. The counting process, which began on Tuesday morning, extended over 40 hours, concluding in the early hours of Thursday. Wanjari, who is a sitting MLC, garnered 67,231 votes, while Kohale received 63,960 votes.
This victory marks a significant setback for the BJP, particularly as it occurred in the hometown of prominent leaders such as Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, both of whom campaigned vigorously for Kohale. Gadkari previously held a seat in the Maharashtra Legislative Council from this constituency for 24 years, highlighting the importance of this loss for the BJP.
The outcome of the election has broader implications for the political landscape in Maharashtra, with the opposition coalition, Maha Vikas Aghadi, winning three out of the five contested MLC seats. The ruling BJP-led Mahayuti alliance managed to secure only two seats. Following the results, Congress leaders criticized the BJP, referencing a now-deleted tweet from Fadnavis that claimed the party had achieved a “big fat zero” in the elections.
The results have sparked discussions about the future of the BJP in Maharashtra, especially in light of its historical dominance in the region. Congress leaders have expressed confidence in their party's resurgence, with state unit chief Harshwardhan Sapkal emphasizing the significance of Wanjari's win in a city that houses the RSS headquarters. Meanwhile, the NCP (SP) also made gains, winning the Pune graduates and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar graduates constituencies.
Looking ahead, the BJP will need to reassess its strategies and address the challenges posed by the opposition. The Legislative Council, which consists of 78 members, currently has the BJP as the largest party with 35 members, followed by Shiv Sena with 12 and NCP with 10. The recent election results could signal a shift in voter sentiment as parties prepare for future contests, particularly the upcoming elections in 2029.
