Congress won the Nagpur Graduates' seat, defeating BJP by over 3,000 votes.
BJP-led NDA claimed 16 out of 28 contested Legislative Council seats across four states.
Karnataka's Congress faced significant losses, including all four seats in the state.
In the recent Legislative Council elections held on October 23, Congress achieved a notable victory by retaining the Nagpur Graduates' constituency in Maharashtra, despite widespread defeats in other states. The counting process, which extended into the early hours of Thursday, confirmed Congress candidate Abhijeet Wanjari's win over BJP's Sudhakar Kohale by a margin of 3,271 votes.
The elections saw the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) emerge as the dominant force, securing 16 of the 28 seats contested across Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Maharashtra. The BJP alone won 13 seats, marking it as the largest party in this election cycle. In Karnataka, the BJP-Janata Dal (Secular) alliance swept all four available seats, with significant victories over Congress incumbents.
In Maharashtra, while the opposition coalition Maha Vikas Aghadi won three out of five seats, the retention of the Nagpur seat was particularly significant for Congress. Wanjari received 67,231 votes, while Kohale garnered 63,960. This outcome was crucial given Nagpur's political importance as the home city of prominent BJP leaders, including Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
The results from other states were mixed. In Bihar, the BJP won three of the eight contested seats, while the Jan Suraaj Party and RJD each secured one seat. In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP claimed six out of eleven seats, further solidifying its position in the region. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had previously commented on the Congress's performance, questioning their expected outcomes before the Nagpur result was finalized.
Looking ahead, the Congress party plans to analyze its performance in Karnataka and other states to address the setbacks experienced during this election cycle. The party's leadership, including Karnataka Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar, has acknowledged the need for strategic reassessment to improve future electoral prospects.
