Abhijeet Wanjari wins Nagpur MLC seat with 67,231 votes.
BJP's Sudhakar Kohale trails with 63,960 votes.
This loss marks a significant setback for the BJP in Nagpur, a stronghold for its leaders.
In a significant political development, Congress candidate Abhijeet Wanjari has successfully retained the Nagpur Division Graduates’ constituency seat, defeating BJP's Sudhakar Kohale by a margin of 3,271 votes. The vote counting commenced on Tuesday morning and concluded in the early hours of Thursday, revealing a closely fought contest.
Wanjari, the sitting MLC, garnered a total of 67,231 votes, while Kohale, a former MLA, received 63,960 votes. The election was particularly crucial as it took place in the hometown of prominent BJP leaders, including Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, both of whom campaigned vigorously for Kohale.
Initially, Kohale had a lead over Wanjari after the second round of counting, where he polled 60,924 votes against Wanjari's 56,630. However, as no candidate achieved the necessary quota of votes, the counting proceeded to second preference votes. Ultimately, Wanjari's strong performance in the elimination rounds led to his victory.
The Nagpur Division Graduates’ constituency has a historical significance, having been represented by Gadkari for several terms. This recent loss for the BJP is viewed as a considerable setback, especially given the party's previous stronghold in the region. The outcome is likely to have implications for future elections in Maharashtra, as it reflects shifting voter sentiments.
Looking ahead, the Congress party aims to build on this momentum, while the BJP will need to reassess its strategies in the region. The political landscape in Nagpur may see further developments as both parties prepare for upcoming electoral challenges.
