Londhe emphasizes the insensitivity of lavish spending during a farmer crisis.
In a strong critique of the ruling party, Congress spokesperson Atul Londhe has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of excessive spending on Navratri Garba celebrations, estimating the total cost to be around ₹100 crore over a nine-day period. This statement was made during a press conference in Nagpur, where Londhe highlighted the government's misplaced priorities amid ongoing agricultural distress faced by farmers.
Londhe provided specific figures sourced from contractors, indicating that the expenditures included ₹60 lakh allocated for marquees covering over 24,000 square feet, ₹7 lakh per day for air-conditioning, and ₹50 lakh daily for sound systems, lighting, and performers. Additionally, he noted that daily costs for illumination and food arrangements ranged between ₹15 lakh to ₹25 lakh, raising questions about the justification for such lavish spending during a time of crisis.
While Londhe clarified that Congress does not oppose the cultural significance of Garba or devotion to the goddess, he expressed concern over what he termed as conspicuous spending. He stated, "Lavish celebrations amid the agricultural crisis amounted to insensitivity towards farmers," emphasizing the disconnect between the government's spending habits and the struggles of the farming community.
The implications of this spending are significant, as it reflects a broader issue of governmental priorities in India, particularly in Maharashtra, where many farmers are grappling with the repercussions of drought and economic hardship. The contrast between the extravagant festivities and the dire situation of farmers has sparked a debate about the ethical responsibilities of political leaders during challenging times.
Looking ahead, Congress plans to continue its scrutiny of the BJP's financial decisions and their impact on the agricultural sector. With the festive season in full swing, the party aims to raise awareness about the plight of farmers and advocate for more responsible governance that prioritizes the needs of the rural population over extravagant celebrations.
