The Congress party has responded sharply to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent criticisms regarding its performance in the MLC elections, urging him to cease his 'sermonizing' and instead focus on pressing economic issues such as inflation and the lack of private investment. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh emphasized that voters across key cities, including Varanasi and Nagpur, have expressed discontent with the Prime Minister's policies, effectively passing a 'no-confidence motion' against him.
Ramesh pointed out that the BJP suffered losses in both Varanasi, Modi's own constituency, and Nagpur, traditionally a stronghold for the party. He questioned why the Prime Minister is not reflecting on these setbacks while criticizing Congress's electoral performance. Ramesh's comments were made in a post on social media platform X, where he highlighted the economic struggles faced by millions of families due to rising inflation and unemployment.
In a direct challenge to Modi, Congress leaders have suggested that if the Prime Minister is confident in the integrity of electronic voting machines (EVMs), he should commit to conducting future elections using paper ballots. This statement comes in the wake of Modi's taunts regarding Congress's electoral failures, particularly in light of the recent MLC elections that utilized paper ballots, a key demand from opposition parties.
The Congress party's media head, Pawan Khera, echoed these sentiments, asserting that Modi's claims about EVMs lack credibility unless he takes concrete actions to restore public trust in the electoral process. Khera called for the reinstatement of voters who were allegedly removed from electoral rolls and for the repeal of laws that grant immunity to electoral officials.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, the Congress party's challenge to PM Modi highlights a growing discontent among voters and raises questions about the future of electoral integrity in India. With upcoming elections on the horizon, the party's demands for transparency and accountability may resonate with an electorate increasingly concerned about economic stability and governance.
