In response to the looming threat of drought, residents of Nagpur are calling on the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) to prioritize the restoration of Pandhrabodi Lake, which has seen a drastic reduction in size over the years. The local environmental group, Nagpur Ploggers, recently met with NMC commissioner Vipin Itankar, presenting a memorandum that outlines a detailed plan for the lake's revival.
The memorandum emphasizes the importance of restoring the natural flow of rainwater from the surrounding catchment areas into the lake. Citizens have expressed concerns about various obstructions in the water channels and have requested improvements to the existing drainage systems. They believe that addressing these issues is critical for the lake's health and sustainability.
Among the key proposals is the removal of accumulated silt, plastic debris, and invasive plant species such as water hyacinth. The group advocates for the use of suitable machinery while ensuring environmental safeguards are in place. Additionally, they are calling for thorough inspections of the lake's banks and embankments, with necessary reinforcements and protective barriers to prevent further waste dumping.
The memorandum also highlights the need to preserve historical wells and other heritage structures located within the lake complex. Citizens are advocating for a permanent system for regular cleaning, security, and maintenance of the lake after the rejuvenation efforts are completed. Suraj Shrivastava, the founder of Nagpur Ploggers, stated, "We want the NMC officials to visit and inspect the lake along with us, and brainstorm a sustainable maintenance mechanism for the water body."
Following their meeting, the commissioner assured the group that prompt action would be taken, instilling hope among citizens that tangible measures for the lake's revival are on the horizon. As the community rallies for the lake's restoration, the focus remains on creating a sustainable future for this vital water resource.
