Chandrapur district is taking decisive action against illegal water extraction due to a concerning 30.43% deficit in rainfall, which raises alarms about drinking water availability in the upcoming months. The district administration has mandated a crackdown on unauthorized water withdrawal from various sources, including reservoirs, rivers, and lakes.
Collector Vasumana Pant, who also leads the District Disaster Management Authority, has initiated the formation of flying squads at the revenue circle level. These teams are tasked with monitoring and controlling indiscriminate water extraction to preserve existing water stocks for essential needs. The squads will conduct both routine and surprise inspections throughout the district to enforce compliance.
The enforcement teams will respond to citizen complaints regarding illegal water extraction, verifying reported locations and inspecting any equipment used for unauthorized withdrawal, such as pumps and pipelines. The squads will include a section engineer from the Water Resources Department, a representative from the Water Conservation Department, and personnel from the Zilla Parishad, along with a revenue circle officer and a police sub-inspector.
The administration emphasizes the importance of safeguarding drinking water supplies as the district approaches drier months. The enforcement teams are expected to focus on preventing unauthorized withdrawals that could threaten the availability of water for essential purposes, ensuring that residents have access to adequate drinking water.
To maintain accountability, the teams are required to submit reports to the Collector’s office every Monday. These reports will detail inspections conducted, instances of unauthorized extraction identified, and actions taken to address these violations. This initiative reflects the administration's commitment to managing water resources effectively during a critical period for the district.
