Captain Smit Machchhar, who recently survived a mid-air cockpit attack while piloting a flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30, is being hailed as a hero. His actions not only ensured his survival but also the safety of more than 170 passengers on board. The news of the incident reached his family in Akola, where initial fears for his safety quickly transformed into pride as details of his bravery emerged.

Smit's mother, Geetaben, hails from the Jogi family in Ramdas Peth, Akola. Her brothers, Deepak, Rajendra, and Suresh Jogi, maintain a close relationship with the Machchhar family. Rajendra Jogi, residing in Kolkhed, described Smit as a humble individual dedicated to his work. He recalled how Smit would always assist his colleagues, a trait that has been instrumental in his professional development.

In a video call from his hospital bed, Smit shared with Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he recited the Hanuman Chalisa during the crisis. He expressed that despite his injuries, he felt compelled to act when he realized the aircraft was in distress, emphasizing that he could not allow the passengers to perish. His uncles noted that their fear turned into immense pride upon learning of his determination to save others.

Local BJP MLC Vasant Khandelwal visited Smit's relatives in Akola, while the Ministry of External Affairs reported that he is recovering well under excellent medical care. Rajendra fondly remembered Smit as a disciplined and affectionate child, highlighting his artistic talents during his youth. After earning a degree in textile engineering, Smit joined the family business before pursuing his dream of becoming a pilot, a goal supported by his parents.

Having achieved his ambition, Smit worked with SpiceJet for 11 years before moving to flydubai four years ago. His family cherishes memories of him as a playful nephew who brought joy during holidays, leaving a void when he departed. Rajendra emphasized that the entire Jogi family, including his wife Sangeeta and daughter Khushi, share in the pride of Smit's remarkable achievements.
