In a recent address in Nagpur, Maharashtra's Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule urged affluent farmers to voluntarily opt out of the state's loan waiver scheme. He emphasized that this move would help alleviate the financial burden on banks, especially in drought-affected regions where farmers are already struggling. Bawankule's comments come amid rising concerns over reports of aggressive loan recovery practices by financial institutions in these vulnerable areas.
Bawankule highlighted that approximately 8 to 10 lakh individuals across Maharashtra do not require food security assistance, suggesting that those who can afford it should relinquish their benefits from the food security scheme. He noted that in Nagpur district alone, around 60,000 people have already opted out of receiving free food grains, indicating a growing awareness among the populace regarding the misuse of welfare benefits.
Addressing the issue of forceful loan recovery, particularly in Akola and Marathwada, Bawankule instructed local collectors to take decisive action against banks engaging in such practices. He assured that he would personally verify complaints and collaborate with collectors to ensure that farmers facing drought do not endure undue pressure from lenders. The minister also stated that law enforcement and local authorities have been directed to combat illegal money lending activities that exploit farmers.
The implications of Bawankule's statements are significant for the agricultural community in Maharashtra. By urging wealthy farmers to step back from loan waivers, the government aims to create a more equitable financial environment. Additionally, the measures taken against coercive recovery practices are expected to provide relief to farmers who are already under financial strain due to adverse weather conditions.
Looking ahead, the state government plans to enhance its efforts in resolving issues related to crop loans that are stalled due to incomplete KYC processes. Bawankule mentioned that local officials, including gram sevaks and agriculture assistants, will be deployed to expedite the completion of these formalities. Furthermore, he announced that the second installment under the Ahilyadevi Holkar scheme has started reaching farmers, which is expected to provide additional financial support during these challenging times.
