The Ministry of Ayush has today released a detailed Public Health Advisory addressing the challenges posed by extreme heat and heatwaves during the ongoing summer season. This advisory underscores the importance of staying hydrated, avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours, and wearing light cotton clothing. It also encourages the consumption of seasonal fruits and electrolyte-rich fluids to combat heat stress.

Citizens are warned to be vigilant for signs of heat-related illnesses, which may include dizziness, headaches, nausea, altered mental states, elevated body temperatures, dehydration, seizures, and fainting. The advisory classifies heatstroke as a medical emergency that necessitates immediate medical intervention. In severe cases, individuals are urged to contact emergency services via helplines 108 and 102.

The advisory is aimed at the general public, particularly vulnerable groups such as infants, children, pregnant women, the elderly, outdoor workers, and those with chronic health conditions like heart disease and hypertension. It highlights the need for special care and monitoring for these populations during heatwave conditions. Employers and event organizers are also encouraged to implement measures such as shaded rest areas, regular hydration breaks, and awareness campaigns about heat stress symptoms.

In addition to standard precautions, the advisory integrates traditional wellness practices from various Ayush systems, including Ayurveda, Siddha, Yoga, Unani, and Homeopathy. Recommendations include cooling dietary practices and the consumption of hydrating beverages like buttermilk, coconut water, and lemon-based drinks. Traditional preparations such as Nimbukaphala Panaka, Amra Prapanaka, and Chincha Panaka are suggested to help regulate body temperature in extreme heat.

The Ministry further advocates for the inclusion of hydrating foods in daily diets during the summer, such as cucumbers, watermelons, limes, musk melons, ash gourds, and tomatoes. These measures aim to equip the public with the knowledge and resources necessary to protect themselves from the adverse effects of extreme heat this summer.
