In a troubling incident at the primary health center (PHC) in Talegaon, Wardha district, a woman medical officer was assaulted by an accused brought in by police for a medical examination. The attack took place around midnight on Wednesday, when Kadir Ali Razzaq Ali, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, verbally abused and physically assaulted the doctor in front of police personnel. The incident, captured on CCTV, quickly went viral, prompting outrage among local medical professionals.
The accused was being escorted by two police officers and three home guards when he allegedly slapped the medical officer and continued to hurl obscenities even after being removed from the outpatient department. This incident is not isolated; just six months prior, a similar assault on a doctor occurred at the same facility, highlighting ongoing safety concerns for healthcare workers in the area.
In response to the assault, medical officers across Wardha district staged a boycott of their duties on Thursday, demanding immediate action against the accused and the police officers involved. Following the medical officer's complaint, police registered a case against Kadir Ali, intensifying the call for accountability and improved security measures for medical personnel during such examinations.
The incident has raised significant concerns regarding the safety protocols in place for healthcare providers dealing with individuals brought in by law enforcement. Additionally, the area has been under scrutiny for alleged illegal activities, including the sale of alcohol and drugs, further complicating the environment in which medical professionals operate.
In a show of solidarity, representatives from the AITUC and the Maharashtra State Medical Officers’ Federation condemned the assault and submitted a memorandum to local authorities, including the district collector and the superintendent of police. They are demanding stringent actions against the accused and the police personnel who failed to ensure the safety of the medical officer. Furthermore, the Federation announced that medical examinations for accused individuals would no longer take place at PHCs until adequate safety measures are implemented.
