A violent confrontation occurred at the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital, commonly referred to as Mayo Hospital, in Nagpur on Wednesday afternoon. The incident involved a resident doctor, Dr. Sameer Chandekar, and a police constable, Ranjit Jadhav, who had brought his son for treatment after a motorcycle accident. Tensions escalated when Dr. Chandekar prioritized another critical patient over Jadhav's son, leading to an altercation that resulted in allegations of assault against both parties.

According to the police report, Dr. Chandekar filed a complaint claiming that Jadhav confronted him aggressively and physically assaulted him. The complaint further indicated that Jadhav's son, Vedant, also allegedly attacked the doctor. In response, Jadhav lodged a counter-complaint, asserting that he and his son were mistreated by the hospital staff, who allegedly refused to provide necessary medical documentation for transferring Vedant to another facility.

The police have registered offenses against both Jadhav and his son, as well as against Dr. Chandekar and several unidentified doctors. However, no arrests have been made as investigations into both complaints are ongoing. The allegations have yet to be substantiated in court, leaving the situation unresolved.

This incident has reignited discussions about the safety of healthcare workers in government hospitals, particularly in casualty departments where the urgency of patient care often clashes with family expectations. The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors and other medical organizations have condemned the violence and called for immediate action to enhance security measures for healthcare professionals.

In light of these events, a delegation from various medical associations met with Dr. Avinash Gawande, the newly appointed dean of IGGMC, to address the urgent need for effective security protocols. They emphasized that violence against healthcare workers is unacceptable and urged for administrative measures to ensure that doctors can perform their duties without fear of aggression. The outcomes of the police investigations and the hospital administration's response will be crucial in shaping future security policies.
