In a troubling incident at a private hospital on Umred Road, Nagpur, police have initiated legal action against the relatives of a patient and six others for their alleged involvement in an assault on hospital staff. This confrontation occurred on Tuesday night, stemming from a dispute over treatment fees for an accident victim.
The situation escalated when Sandeep Thokar, 42, was admitted to the hospital after a serious accident. Hospital staff, including Subhash Gaidhane, who was on night duty, assessed Thokar's injuries, determining that his leg was fractured and requiring immediate care. After providing treatment, the staff requested a payment of ₹1,500 for the services rendered, which the patient's relatives reportedly refused to pay, opting instead to take him to another facility.
Following this initial disagreement, one of the accused returned to the hospital with a group of six individuals. They confronted Gaidhane, demanding the treatment documents and allegedly resorted to verbal abuse and physical violence, striking him with a hockey stick. This altercation not only left Gaidhane injured but also resulted in damage to hospital property, raising serious concerns about safety in healthcare environments.
The Imambada police, acting on Gaidhane's complaint, have filed charges against the accused, including assault, criminal intimidation, and property damage. This incident highlights the growing tensions between healthcare providers and patients' families, particularly in high-stress situations such as medical emergencies.
As the investigation progresses, authorities are focusing on gathering evidence and witness statements to ensure a thorough examination of the events that transpired. The hospital management has expressed concern over the safety of their staff and is cooperating with law enforcement to address the issue effectively.
