The All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Nagpur recently hosted a comprehensive one-and-a-half-day workshop dedicated to Randomised Controlled Trials (RCTs). The event, organized by the Departments of Pharmacology and Biostatistics, aimed to enhance the skills of participants in designing and conducting clinical trials effectively.

The workshop was officially inaugurated by Prof. (Dr) Prashant P. Joshi, the Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS Nagpur. In his opening remarks, Dr. Joshi underscored the critical role of RCTs in producing reliable evidence that informs clinical practices. He also discussed scenarios in which RCTs may be impractical, highlighting the complexities involved in clinical research.

The workshop attracted 34 participants who engaged in a variety of sessions over two days. The first day was dedicated to understanding the foundational elements of RCTs, including technical and ethical considerations, outcome measures, trial designs, sample size calculations, and protocol development. These sessions provided participants with essential knowledge to design effective clinical trials.

On the second day, the focus shifted to statistical analysis and quality indicators necessary for the management of clinical trials. Participants learned about the reporting and publication processes for RCTs, equipping them with the tools needed to disseminate their findings effectively. The organizing committee included notable figures such as Dr. Ganesh Dakhale, who served as the Organising Chairman, and Dr. Narendra Kumar Tiwary, the Organising Co-Chairman.

The implications of this workshop extend beyond the immediate participants, as it aims to foster a culture of rigorous clinical research within the region. By enhancing the capabilities of healthcare professionals in Nagpur, AIIMS is contributing to the broader goal of improving clinical practices across India. Future workshops and training sessions are anticipated to continue this momentum, further strengthening the research community in the medical field.
