Abhijit Wanjarri's win in Nagpur raises concerns for BJP amid candidate selection issues.
Abhijit Wanjarri defeats BJP's Sudhakar Kohale by 3,271 votes.
Over 15,000 votes were declared invalid, raising questions about voter dissatisfaction.
BJP's campaign manager accepts responsibility for the defeat and vows to improve in future elections.
In a surprising turn of events, Abhijit Wanjarri has won a second consecutive term in the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections, defeating the BJP's Sudhakar Kohale by a margin of 3,271 votes. This election, held on October 23, was particularly significant as it took place in Nagpur, a stronghold for the BJP and home to prominent leaders like Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
The context of this election is marked by internal strife within the BJP, particularly highlighted by the candidacy of Anil Sole, a former MLC and Gadkari confidant, who ran as an Independent after being denied a ticket. His presence in the race and subsequent withdrawal from campaigning only after Fadnavis intervened has raised questions about the impact of such dissent on Kohale's performance. Additionally, the election saw over 15,000 invalid votes in Nagpur, with nearly 9,000 ballots marked incorrectly, suggesting potential voter confusion or dissatisfaction with the candidates.
Kohale has announced plans to appeal the decision regarding the invalid votes, indicating his intent to challenge the election results. Historically, Nagpur has been a prestigious seat for the BJP, with Gadkari representing the graduates’ constituency from 1990 to 2014. The loss has prompted Chandrashekhar Bawankule, who managed the campaign, to take responsibility, stating that the party will focus on regaining the seat in the next elections.
The broader implications of this election extend beyond Nagpur, as the BJP contested three seats in Maharashtra but only secured victory in Pune. There, Kaustubh Gawade triumphed over a Shiv Sena rebel, amidst allegations of sabotage from Sena workers against the BJP candidate in the Pune teachers' constituency. Bawankule has vowed to investigate these claims and implement corrective measures, emphasizing the need for unity within the alliance.
Looking ahead, the BJP faces critical challenges in maintaining its political dominance in Maharashtra. The internal conflicts within the Mahayuti alliance, particularly highlighted by the defeat of NCP's Satish Chavan by SP's Pratapsinh Patil, indicate a fractured political landscape. As the parties regroup, the upcoming elections will be pivotal in determining their strategies and candidate selections to avoid further setbacks.
