Abhijit Wanjarri wins the Nagpur Graduates' seat in the Maharashtra Legislative Council.
The election saw a close contest, with Wanjarri overtaking Kohale through second-preference votes.
This victory marks a symbolic setback for the BJP, which had held the seat for nearly 60 years.
Abhijit Wanjarri of the Congress party has successfully retained the Nagpur Graduates' seat in the Maharashtra Legislative Council, defeating the BJP's Sudhakar Kohale. The election results, which were finalized after a lengthy counting process that began on October 27, reflect a notable political shift in a city known as the headquarters of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
The polling took place on October 23, with initial counts showing Kohale leading with 60,924 votes compared to Wanjarri's 56,630. However, as the counting progressed and second-preference votes were redistributed from eliminated candidates, Wanjarri managed to secure a victory. This win is particularly significant as it breaks the BJP's hold on the constituency, which it had maintained for nearly six decades.
The Nagpur Graduates' seat has historical importance, previously represented by prominent leaders such as Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and the late Gangadharrao Fadnavis, father of current Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The timing of Wanjarri's win is crucial, especially following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent comments questioning the Congress party's performance in Legislative Council elections across various states.
In Maharashtra, the Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition has claimed three out of five contested seats, with the Congress party celebrating its second consecutive victory in Nagpur, a stronghold for BJP leaders. State Congress chief Harshwardhan Sapkal emphasized the significance of this win against the backdrop of BJP's previous dominance in the region.
Abhijit Wanjarri, an advocate with a political lineage, has previously served in various roles within the Congress party and has a background in student politics. His recent victory is viewed as a testament to the unity of the Maha Vikas Aghadi and the support from numerous social organizations. Looking ahead, Wanjarri's win could influence future political dynamics in Maharashtra as the Congress seeks to build on this momentum.
