In a shocking incident in Nagpur, a 75-year-old man was defrauded of ₹8 lakh by cyber criminals impersonating Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officers. The victim, residing in New Manish Nagar, was contacted by a caller claiming to be a CBI official who falsely accused him of involvement in a sex racket and threatened him with arrest.

The fraud unfolded as the scammers employed psychological manipulation, convincing the elderly man that he was under digital surveillance and effectively under house arrest. This tactic was designed to instill fear and compliance, making it easier for the fraudsters to extract money from him. As the call progressed, additional individuals joined in, further escalating the threats of legal repercussions.

Ultimately, the victim was coerced into transferring a total of ₹8 lakh from his bank account through online transactions. It was only after realizing the extent of the deception that he decided to report the incident to the Beltarodi police on October 15. The authorities have since registered a case against unidentified individuals under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which addresses cheating and fraud, as well as provisions of the Information Technology Act.

This incident highlights the growing menace of cyber fraud, particularly targeting vulnerable populations such as senior citizens. The use of impersonation and intimidation tactics by scammers poses a significant threat, prompting law enforcement agencies to enhance their vigilance and public awareness campaigns to prevent such crimes.

Moving forward, the Beltarodi police are actively investigating the case, seeking to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. They have urged the public to remain cautious and report any suspicious calls or activities to prevent further victimization. Authorities are also considering measures to educate the community about recognizing and avoiding similar scams in the future.
