On October 20, during the 70th Dhamma Chakra Pravartan Din at Dikshabhumi in Nagpur, a remarkable initiative involving identification bands significantly aided in reuniting lost children with their parents. This event, which commemorates Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar's conversion to Buddhism, attracted approximately 1.2 million attendees, making crowd management a critical concern.
The Maharashtra government, under the guidance of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Social Justice Minister Sanjay Shirsat, implemented several safety measures to protect children amidst the large gathering. Among these was the distribution of wristbands to every child, inscribed with their names, village names, and their parents' contact numbers. This proactive approach ensured that any child who became separated from their guardians could be quickly located by volunteers.
A total of 1500 volunteers, primarily students from local hostels supported by the Social Welfare Department, played a crucial role in this operation. They were trained to assist children in distress and to reunite them with their families using the information provided on the wristbands. This system proved effective, with reports indicating that around 450 to 470 children were safely returned to their parents during the event.
The initiative received positive feedback from attendees, highlighting the importance of such measures in large gatherings. Sukeshni Telgote, Assistant Commissioner of the Social Justice and Special Assistance Department, emphasized that the strategy not only ensured safety but also enhanced the overall experience for attendees. Parents expressed their gratitude, noting that the wristbands provided peace of mind in such a crowded environment.
As the Dhamma Chakra Pravartan Din continues to grow in significance, the successful implementation of this identification band system may set a precedent for future events. With over 25,000 wristbands prepared and a dedicated team of volunteers, the event organizers demonstrated a commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants, paving the way for improved crowd management strategies in the future.
