A devastating accident occurred at the Indamer aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility in MIHAN, Nagpur, on Saturday, resulting in the death of a security guard and serious injuries to a trainee. The incident involved a 40-foot-long iron gate that collapsed while being closed after an aircraft had just exited the hangar.
The gate, which is essential for allowing aircraft to enter and exit the facility, reportedly fell when it was being slid shut. Witnesses indicated that the gate may have been pulled with excessive force, leading to a failure of one of its metal supports. Kailash Chafekar, the deceased guard, was pronounced dead at AIIMS-Nagpur shortly after the incident, while Armaan Pradhan, the trainee, was admitted in critical condition.
According to police reports, four individuals were operating the gate at the time of the accident. Abhishek Sangode, another guard on duty, stated that the sliding mechanism likely malfunctioned, causing the gate to topple over onto Chafekar and Pradhan. Emergency services were quickly summoned, and both victims were transported to AIIMS-Nagpur, where Chafekar was found unresponsive and later declared dead.
The company has expressed its commitment to supporting the families affected by this tragedy. A senior official confirmed that they would cover the medical expenses for Pradhan and assist Chafekar's family, including educational support for his children. Meanwhile, local police have initiated an investigation into the incident, focusing on the gate's mechanical components and the operational procedures in place at the facility.
As investigations continue, authorities are examining how the gate moved beyond its intended supports, which led to the tragic collapse. The findings will be crucial in preventing similar incidents in the future and ensuring the safety of personnel at the MRO facility.
