In a troubling incident in Nagpur, a 17-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a 20-year-old man at a café located in the Nandanvan area. The event, which occurred in July, has raised significant concerns regarding the safety protocols in establishments that provide private seating options, such as curtained cubicles.
The police have initiated an investigation following a complaint filed against Sameer Sheikh, who is accused of luring the minor to the café and forcing her into sexual relations. Reports indicate that Sheikh threatened the girl with severe repercussions if she disclosed the assault, leading her to initially remain silent about the incident.
After enduring repeated harassment, the girl confided in her father, who encouraged her to seek help. On Sunday, Sheikh reportedly visited her home, attempting to coerce her into taking a pregnancy test. This alarming behavior prompted the girl to approach law enforcement, resulting in a case being registered under sexual assault laws and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The incident has highlighted the increasing prevalence of “privacy cafés” in Nagpur, particularly along Nandanvan Cement Road and in other areas of the city. These cafés often promote their private spaces on social media, which has previously led to law enforcement issues, including disturbances and clashes. Authorities have conducted raids on some of these establishments in the past due to complaints regarding safety and security.
In light of this incident, officials are calling for a thorough review of safety measures in cafés that cater to minors. There is a pressing need to ensure that such venues have adequate safeguards in place to protect vulnerable individuals from potential harm.
