World Spine Day brings attention to the significance of spinal health, emphasizing how everyday habits can lead to discomfort and pain. Orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Krishna Subramanyam from Yashoda Hospitals in Hyderabad outlines seven common practices that may be detrimental to spinal well-being, along with actionable solutions to mitigate their effects.
Many individuals experience back pain as a gradual issue rather than a sudden occurrence. Daily activities, often perceived as harmless, can accumulate strain on the spine. Factors such as prolonged sitting, poor posture while using screens, and improper lifting techniques can contribute to stiffness and discomfort. Dr. Subramanyam stresses the importance of recognizing these habits and adjusting them to protect spinal health.
The first habit to address is sitting for extended periods. Remaining seated without breaks can lead to tight muscles and stiff joints. To counter this, it is recommended to stand, walk, or stretch for a minute every half hour. Another common issue is slouching over screens, which places undue strain on the neck and upper back. Keeping screens at eye level and maintaining relaxed shoulders can help alleviate this problem.
Additionally, a sedentary lifestyle can weaken core muscles, making the spine more vulnerable. Regular exercise, including walking and stretching, is essential for maintaining spinal health. Carrying heavy bags on one shoulder and improper lifting techniques can also lead to discomfort. Dr. Subramanyam advises using backpacks and proper lifting methods to distribute weight evenly and reduce strain.
Finally, inadequate sleep support and ignoring early signs of pain can exacerbate spinal issues. Choosing a supportive mattress and being attentive to recurring pain are crucial steps. If back pain persists for more than two weeks, it is advisable to seek medical attention. Overall, small adjustments in daily routines can significantly improve spinal health and prevent discomfort.
