On November 3, 2026, Telangana's Health Minister C. Damodar Raja Narasimha announced significant advancements in cancer treatment services across the state. The government has established day-care cancer centres in all 33 districts, allowing patients to receive chemotherapy locally, thereby reducing the need for travel to Hyderabad for treatment. This initiative aims to enhance accessibility to cancer care for all residents.

During a review meeting focused on medical services for cancer patients in government hospitals, Minister Narasimha highlighted the government's ongoing efforts to bolster cancer care infrastructure. Plans are underway to set up Regional Cancer Centres, which will further strengthen the state's capacity to address cancer treatment and prevention.

Dr. Nori Dattatreyudu, an oncologist and advisor on cancer care to the Telangana government, reported that 35,000 cancer cases have been documented on the state's dedicated cancer registry portal. He emphasized that declaring cancer a notifiable disease and effectively utilizing the cancer registry will significantly aid in monitoring and controlling the disease's spread within the state.

Dr. Nori also praised the state's proactive measures in cancer prevention, including the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination program. He noted that out of 340,000 eligible girls in Telangana, 230,000 have received the HPV vaccine, achieving a coverage rate of 67%. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to promote early detection and screening of cancer in the population.

In the meeting, officials updated the Minister on the cancer treatment facilities available at the MNJ Cancer Hospital and Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS). They explained that while initial treatments occur at these major hospitals, chemotherapy services are now being offered at district-level centres. The Minister instructed officials to enhance facilities for chemotherapy at these centres, ensuring that patients can access treatment closer to home without the need to travel to Hyderabad.
